Sergeant Major of the Army Dickson Owusu
Master Warrant Officer Dickson Owusu hails from Kwahu Amanfrom in the eastern region of Ghana. He was born on 22 September 1965. He completed his primary and middle school education graduating in 1982. He enlisted into the Ghana Army in April 1986 and had his basic infantry training in Tamale at Kamina Barracks. He completed the military training in September the same year and posted to 66 Artillery Regiment in Volta Barracks, Ho.
MWO Owusu completed his basic 120mm mortar course in 1987 and was assigned to the technical assistant department. From 1988 to 1996 Owusu completed the technical assistant courses: BIII, BII and BI. He has also completed several military career courses including the Basic NCO Tactical course; the Assault Pioneer course; the Drill and Duties course; the Artillery courses in 107mm Rocket Launcher, 122mm Howitzer, 122mm Multiple Rocket Launcher System; the Advance NCO Tactical course; and the Troop Warrant Officers course.
MWO Owusu has participated in various United Nations peace support operations including three tours in support of United Nations Interim Force, Lebanon – 1990, 2001, 2007; three tours in support of Economic Community Cease Fire Monitoring Group, Lebanon – 1991, 1993, 1998; two tours in support of United Nations Assistant Mission in Sierra Leone – 2003, 2005; two tours in support of United Nations Operation Cote D’ Ivoire – 2008, 2010; and a tour as part of the United Nations Assistant Mission in Rwanda in 1994 during the Rwandan civil war.
SMA Owusu has held various leadership positions and appointments in the Ghana Army to include: Section Commander, Ghanbatt 53 ‘A’ Company; Platoon Warrant Officer, Ghanbatt 65 ‘HQ’ Company; Company Sergeant Major Charlie Company, Army Recruit Training School, Shai Hills; Battery Sergeant Major, Ghanbatt 8 Support Company; Operations Assistant, Ghanbatt 12; Regimental Sergeant Major, 66 Artillery Regiment, Ho; and Command Sergeant Major, Southern Command, Teshie Accra. He also served in the Army Recruits Training School Shai Hills as a Minor Tactics and Drill Instructor.
The SMA has received numerous awards and decorations to include a long service and good conduct medal; United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon medal, three (3) awards; United Nations Assistant Mission in Rwanda medal; United Nations Assistant Mission in Sierra Leone medal, two (2) awards; United Nations Operation Cote D’ Ivoire medal two (2) awards, Economic Community Cease Fire Monitoring Group medal three (3) awards; and the Best Warrant Officer 2006 Southern Command Award.
He obtained his G. C. E O level in 1995 with Institute of Adult Education in Ho Ghana and is a graduate of U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 59, Fort Bliss, Texas.
The SMA uses his free time watching live football matches and listening to live broadcast discussion programs. He is married to Edith and blessed with three girls, Dorcas, Diana, and Erica. He was appointed the Sergeant Major of the Ghana Army on 27 October 2010.
