William O. Wooldridge, was sworn in as the first Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) on 11 July 1966. SMA Wooldridge was chosen by the Chief of Staff (CoS) himself, General Harold K. Johnson. SMA Wooldridge was appointed to be an ombudsman for the enlisted personnel of the Army, enlisted spokesman on the staff, and enlisted member in the CoS personal retinue.
